Garden Social, Chester
small independent business • visual narrative • bespoke mural • hand painted
“Stef is a brilliant artist and the mural she produced using a few of our ideas is exceptional. Her attention to detail is brilliant and she managed to capture the vibe of our coffee shop perfectly.”
- EWAN & HOLLY, OWNERS - GARDEN SOCIAL
First time coffee shop owners Ewan and Holly were open to ideas when I first started drafting their statement piece for the shop. They knew they wanted to celebrate Chester, and the fellow local independent businesses that had inspired them to quit their day jobs.
This is the first example of what I would call a ‘visual narrative’, that is a design that tells a story through images. These designs are intended to be ‘read’, that is you go top to bottom, from left to right. This design tells the story of a journey from the Chester city centre, through the Garden Quarter and the terraced streets where the Coffee Shop is located. There are some local iconic buildings, including popular bars and cafes on the route.
The placement of all the elements, with the Garden Social mascot featuring throughout the design, creates a fun and contemporary mural that celebrates the City and the best it has to offer.
If you’re ever in Chester city centre, make your way to Catherine Street, just outside of the city walls, for some truly excellent coffee and cake. It’s genuinely my favourite spot run by lovely people.
